Remembering Oluwale:

A Creative Workshop and Presentation Showcase with Caryl Phillips and guests

This event is an opportunity to experience stories, talks, and music on the story of David Oluwale, and to write, speak, and share your personal response.

During this unique and intimate workshop Leeds Library patron and world-class author Caryl Phillips, who grew up in Leeds, will introduce literary and poetic responses to the David Oluwale story and share his own writing. You will be introduced to the history of David Oluwale by sociologist and Secretary to the #RememberOluwale charity in Leeds, Max Farrar, who has long been researching Oluwale's life and death, alongside Emily Zobel Marshall, lecturer in Postcolonial Literature at Leeds Becket University, and member of the #RememberOluwale Board.

The workshop will incorporate a Q and A and reading with Phillips and Calypso performances by Tobago Crusoe (former Calypso Monarch, as featured in Paddington) and Melanie Abrahams.

Following the session, an edited selection of new creative responses generated at, and beyond, the workshop will be published in a literary magazine in print and online by the David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA, aka #RememberOluwale).

The workshop is a collaboration between DOMA, leading literary producers and curators Renaissance OneLeeds Beckett University and The Leeds Library

This is a rare opportunity for members of the public, students and creatives to hear Caryl Phillips share his work, develop their own creative talent and discuss how we can find ways, through revisiting the Oluwale story, to tackle issues of racism, mental health, and homelessness in Leeds today through the arts. Wine and refreshments will be available at the end of the event.

Tickets £2 to £8
