John Agard's Roll Over Atlantic and Shivanee Ramlochan

  • Bloomsbury Theatre Gordon Street London, England, WC1H United Kingdom (map)

Tilt & Crosspath Theatre present an evening of Caribbean poetry, calypso and satirical wit.

Join poet John Agard in a voyage in verse - his new one-person show Roll Over Atlantic - a quirky revisioning of the notorious New World Enterprise of Christopher Columbus. Performed against an evocative soundscape of Atlantic murmurings, with Agard variously taking on the voices of Columbus, The Atlantic Ocean and a chorus of politically conscious mosquitoes. Directed by Mark C. Hewitt and with musical backing by Thomas Arnold, this is a one-person show that mixes the tides of cabaret and calypso with mischievous satirical wit.

Plus a special guest poetry performance by Trinidadian poet and arts reporter Shivanee Ramlochan.  Shivanee's writing explores with the greatest intensity what it is to be human.  Her first poetry collection Everyone Knows I Am A Haunting has been published this year (Peepal Tree) and she is the deputy editor of the Caribbean review of books.

The evening includes a book launch of Everyone Knows I Am A Haunting (6pm - 7pm RSVP required, to book a place email hq[at]renaissanceone.co.uk) published by Peepal Tree Press (2017).

Shivanee Ramlochan invokes gods, goddesses or demons to do what poetry should do – alarm and ignite us, surprise and blast us and tear at our heartstrings. Welcome to a challenging, unforgettable and courageous new voice.

A unique and energetic force in contemporary British poetry, John Agard’s poems combine acute social observation, puckish wit and a riotous imagination to thrilling effect.
